QQuestioned at a press conference at the UN about Trump’s possible electoral victory, the head of Russian diplomacy assured that Moscow is “ready to work with any leader that the American people choose”, but stressed that it must be on the basis of mutual respect.

Lavrov recalled that during the previous Trump administration “there was constant dialogue, despite the very serious sanctions” that the US imposed on Russia, and stressed that this dialogue “is useful in all cases”.

Asked about Donald Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, a fierce opponent of US aid to Ukraine, Lavrov welcomed his positions.

“He is in favor of peace, of stopping the aid, and we can only welcome that, because what we need is to stop filling Ukraine with weapons and the war will stop,” he stressed.

Ukraine has been relying on financial and weapons aid from Western allies since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Kyiv’s allies have also imposed sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy to try to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort in Ukraine.

Still on the subject of war, Sergei Lavrov considered today that the approaches formulated by the organizers of a possible new Swiss summit on Ukraine are unacceptable for Russia, since they reproduce the plan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, rejected by the Russian side.

“When approaching what they are going to do [numa futura cimeira na Suíça]they all formulated unilateral approaches, absolutely unacceptable for us and for many others who are sincerely interested in peace”, he highlighted, at the same press conference.

Lavrov added that the West seeks to “impose at all costs the so-called Zelensky plan, which is a kind of very obvious ultimatum.”

The head of Russian diplomacy commented in this way on the recent words of the Ukrainian President, who stated that he was in favor of Russia’s participation in the second edition of the Peace Summit hosted by Kyiv, which held its inaugural edition in mid-June in Switzerland without Russian representation, which was not invited.

The Russian minister reiterated that Moscow is ready for negotiations on Ukraine and European security issues, but listed all previous agreements reached since 2014 to date, which according to Lavrov were ruined by the West.

“Taking into account the sad experience of negotiations and consultations with the West and the Ukrainians, we will thoroughly review all points of the agreement on European security that I hope will one day be reached,” he warned.

Moscow will include in this document points “that avoid malicious interpretations and those contrary to consensus”, such as those that frustrated previous agreements between Russia and the West, according to the head of Russian diplomacy.
