The educational authorities of the Lazio region (central Italy) have opened an investigation into a teacher at a high school in Rome for making fascist salutes, homophobic comments and sexual gestures towards his students in class, local media reported Thursday.

According to several videos published by the newspaper ‘La Repubblica’, the teacher under investigation took photos in the classroom with students giving the fascist salute, uttered homophobic comments and made sexual gestures towards other students in the final year of Italian high school at the Rome-based ‘Leopoldo Pirelli’ institute.
“We deeply regret and are concerned by the information provided to us, as racist and homophobic behaviour is unacceptable and in clear contradiction with the values of inclusion.”the Lazio School Office said in a statement reported by local media on Thursday.
Several students reported the incident after graduating, encouraged by their parents, the newspaper reported.
In the recordings, made in recent months, the teacher, who taught History and Philosophy, can be seen making sexual gestures to the young people and claiming that he watched ‘Nazi porn’.
The teacher makes racist and homophobic comments
He also made racist comments against a student of Filipino origin, whom he asked “when he was going to clean his house” and another young gay man asked him if he “had come from Muccassassina”, an LGBT nightclub in Rome.
One student of Egyptian parents never got “more than a 3 or 4” in her exams, while other students with whom she got on better “did well,” the same source said.
This was confirmed by a former teacher at the center, who pointed out that complaints from families “were a constant” because “He openly declared himself to be on the extreme right and punished those who did not support him with failing grades.”
“Those who should have taught our children to be honest citizens have tried to do exactly the opposite,” the parents of the pupils told ‘La Repubblica’.
“Our priority is to ensure a safe and respectful educational environment for all students”added the Lazio School Office.
