UA soldier was “the victim of a stab wound while patrolling the Gare de l’Est station in Paris”said French Interior Minister GĂ©rald Darmanin on X (formerly Twitter).

“He is not in danger. The perpetrator has been arrested”he added, regarding the soldier who was monitoring the Paris train station on Monday night, mobilized as part of Operation Sentinel.

The country’s Minister of the Armed Forces expressed his solidarity with the “wounded soldier”. “Support and recognition to our armed forces who are participating more than ever in guaranteeing the security of the French people”, he added, also on the X.

The attack comes less than two weeks before the opening of the Paris Olympic Games, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.

According to the AFP agency, which cites police sources, the attacker is 40 years old and is already known to the authorities, as he was sentenced to psychiatric hospitalization for a homicide committed in 2018.

This man, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has French nationality, according to one of these sources, adding that he “claimed to be Christian and shouted God is great in French” during the attack.

He justified the attack by saying that the military was “killing people in their country.”

Operation Sentinel was launched in 2015, following the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in the French capital.

Since then, patrols of heavily armed soldiers have become part of daily life for Parisians.

In February 2017, an Egyptian man attacked Operation Sentinel soldiers on duty at the Carrousel du Louvre with a knife, shouting “Allah Akbar” (Allah is Great).
