OPatients have been hospitalized in Egypt in recent months after being evacuated from the Gaza Strip, the WHO said in a statement. They are a small proportion of the thousands of children and adults who need access to specialized medical care outside the Gaza Strip.
“These children are very sick [mais a mãe de uma delas] will get the care they need, thanks to cooperation between multiple partners and states,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“We are immensely grateful for the support and assistance provided by Egypt and Spain. We encourage other countries with medical capacity and infrastructure to receive people who, through no fault of their own, are caught up in this war.”
Almost all of the children (13) have chronic heart problems and one even has cancer.
The children, who are accompanied by 25 people, including family members and health care workers, arrived in Egypt before May 6, after which evacuations became almost impossible due to the closure of the Rafah border crossing. Since then, only 23 people have been evacuated, through another crossing, Kerem Shalom.
Since October, around 5,000 people have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip for treatment, 80% of whom are receiving care in Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
“These children are just the tip of the iceberg. Thousands of people of all ages remain in the Gaza Strip, needing to be evacuated and at risk of dying if they do not have rapid access to the advanced medical care they need,” said Hanan Balkhy, WHO Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.
The process involving the patients who arrived in Spain today was supported by the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, in partnership with the WHO. The Children’s Aid Fund for Palestine handled the patients’ documentation and travel authorizations. The Egyptian government supported the treatment while these people were in the country, which is what Spain has now done. The children will be treated in several hospitals in Spain.
WHO is encouraging other states to do the same.
WHO Europe Director Hans Henri P. Kluge has already thanked Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Health Minister Monica Garcia, “and everyone who made this possible”.
WHO is calling for the creation of multiple corridors to evacuate patients in a sustained, organized, safe and timely manner, through all possible routes, including Rafah and Kerem Shalom.
