JDaniel Sancho’s sentence for the premeditated murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta is now known. The Spaniard was sentenced to life imprisonment this Thursday, August 29.

The Thai court also ordered the payment of compensation to Arrieta’s family in the amount of 106 thousand euros, an amount much lower than the amount they were asking for – 768 thousand euros.

The judge at the Samui Provincial Court announced the court ruling about an hour after the session began, indicating that the sentence had been reduced from death to life imprisonment due to the cooperation of the accused, Spanish media reported.

Daniel Sancho was found guilty of the crimes of “premeditated murder”, “dismemberment” and “passport theft”.

Sancho will have cried when he heard the verdictaccording to witnesses present in the room, along with his parents Rodolfo Sancho and Silvia Bronchalo, the only companions allowed.

According to an agreement signed between Spain and Thailand in 1983, there is a possibility that Sancho could be transferred to Spain. If so, he will first have to serve a minimum number of years in Thailand – eight years – which is established by law for a life sentence.

Remember the case

The son of Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho was arrested in August last year and accused of murdering, dismembering and hiding the body of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta.

Sancho met the victim on August 2 and rode a motorbike together. When they returned to the hotel, they had an argument after the Colombian asked him to have sex. Sancho allegedly punched his friend in the face, leaving him unconscious.

The panicked man then took him to the bathroom, trying to make him regain consciousness. After waiting an hour and with no response from Edwin Arrieta, Sancho decided to begin dismembering the doctor, a process he admitted took “three hours”.

That same day, he placed the man’s remains in black plastic bags and rented a kayak that helped him throw most of them into the sea. The rest of the body was taken to the island’s landfill, where hours later a worker would make the discovery.
