A The arrest was carried out by Raid police, an elite unit, “who intervened with great professionalism, despite the shots they fired,” Darmanin wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

A source close to the case quoted by the AFP news agency said the man was arrested in Nîmes, about 40 km north of the city of La Grande-Motte in southern France, where he presumably carried out the attack.

At least two vehicles, one of which contained a gas cylinder, were set on fire Saturday morning in front of a synagogue in La Grande-Motte, causing an explosion that injured a local police officer.

The information was provided by the police and the mayor of the city, Stéphan Rossignol, who indicated that the officer was injured when he rushed to the scene of the fire, but did not provide further details about his health condition.

La Grande-Motte’s video surveillance cameras captured images of a man in the vicinity of the synagogue waving a Palestinian flag and “possibly holding a gun” in his hand, who then left the scene on foot, according to an investigation source.

The investigation was carried out by the French public prosecutor’s anti-terrorism department, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal revealed.

“This morning’s attack [sĂ¡bado] targeted the La Grande-Motte synagogue, an anti-Semitic act. Once again, our fellow Jews are being targeted (…). I have been informed that the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation and that security forces are currently trying to arrest the suspect,” Gabriel Attal wrote on the social network X.

The attack prompted the French interior minister to urge immediate reinforcement of security at Jewish places of worship.

Addressing all the country’s mayors, Darmanin asked them: “Immediately reinforce the static presence of law enforcement forces in front of Jewish places of worship.”
