O NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, announced this Thursday that Sweden is now an official member of the transatlantic alliance, after months of negotiations.
“It’s official – Sweden is now the 32nd member of NATO, taking its rightful place at our table”announced the person responsible on the social network X.
“Sweden’s membership makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and the entire Alliance safer. I look forward to flying its flag at NATO Headquarters on Monday”he added.
The officialization took place after the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, delivered the instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, United States.

Earlier, the Hungarian ambassador to the United States handed over to the State Department in Washington the official documents ratifying Sweden’s accession to NATO, recently approved by the Hungarian parliament, allowing the Swedish government to present the instrument of access to the head of North American diplomacy. .
“Today I instructed our country’s ambassador in Washington to hand over the ratification document, Hungary having fulfilled all its tasks for Sweden’s accession to NATO”announced the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó.
Ratification by the Hungarian parliament, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz has a two-thirds majority, was delayed several times, with MPs from this party justifying the delay, for example, with Sweden’s “unfair” criticism of politics and democratic drift in Hungary, also denounced by the European Union.
This ends what should have been an “express” process, but which ended up taking 22 months due to Turkey and Hungary’s reluctance about Sweden’s accession.
