They are appreciated for their benefits on the immune system, heart health and cholesterol regulation. However, they deteriorate quickly if they are not stored or handled correctly. Fortunately, simple tips allow you to prolong their freshness and preserve all their qualities.

To keep mushrooms fresh, it is essential not to wash them before storing them: humidity accelerates their degradation. Instead, place them in a paper bag or wrap them in paper towels before putting them in the refrigerator. These materials absorb excess moisture, which helps extend their lifespan.

Preparing mushrooms also requires special attention. To remove soil residue without damaging their texture, use a small brush or damp absorbent paper. Avoid rinsing them under water, as this softens them and can alter the flavor. Cut off the ends of the stems, which are often tougher, then slice them or leave them whole depending on the recipe.

If you want even more flavor, you can marinate your mushrooms in a mixture of olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs before sautéing or roasting them. This will add an extra hit of flavor and will also prevent the mushrooms from drying out while cooking. Another tip to intensify their flavor is to brown them in a hot pan without fat for a few minutes to concentrate their aromas, before adding butter or oil.
