During a recent press conference, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab addressed the issue of the departure of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, who left Venezuela after receiving a safe-conduct pass from the Spanish government. Saab stressed that the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office was fully aware of the proceedings and González Urrutia’s legal situation.

The official said that, despite the existence of an arrest warrant against the opposition figure, respect for the right to asylum guaranteed by the Venezuelan Constitution was respected. In this regard, Saab stressed that the governments of Spain and Venezuela agreed to grant the safe-conduct pass, thus allowing González Urrutia to take advantage of the asylum granted by the European country.

Saab criticized the handling of the case, describing it as the end of a “mediocre Dantean work”suggesting that the handling of the situation by certain actors involved had been unsatisfactory. This statement reflects the context of political and legal tensions surrounding the asylum process and migration policies between the two countries.
