Nicolás Maduro took office on the morning of this Friday, January 10, 2025 as self-proclaimed president of Venezuela. Amid criticism and condemnations from different countries, the third-time president according to the Venezuelan ruling party was sworn in and will go until 2031.

For this reason, USA recently announced an increase in the reward for information leading to the capture of Nicolás Maduro. The figure rose from 15 to 25 million dollars and, although the electoral aspect may have had something to do with it, there would also be reasons behind this capture linked to drug trafficking and other problems for which the North American country accuses Maduro.

US Department of State

Now, in the same publication of said poster, the US Department of State announced the charges for which the self-proclaimed president is requested.

According to the United States, both Maduro, Diosdado Cabello and Vladimir Padrino would be part of the Cartel of the Suns, a criminal group made up of officials of the Government of Venezuela who would take advantage of state tools and facilities for drug trafficking.

According to data cited by El Tiempo, the Venezuelan officials involved in this cartel would have provided “military grade” weapons to the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) to guard and protect cocaine shipments.

This being the case, and for several years now, Maduro has been accused of “narcoterrorism“, conspiracy to traffic cocaine and conspiracy to use and possess machine guns and other devices of destruction “in furtherance of drug-related crimes.”
