O The judge in charge of the trial of former US President Donald Trump, in the case of a bribe paid to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels, to cover up a sex scandal, decided to postpone the reading of the sentence until September 18, more than two months after the initial date of July 11.
The decision came after prosecutors in Manhattan, New York, said they would not oppose the former president’s request to delay sentencing after the US Supreme Court granted him partial immunity in the Capitol attack case.
“While we find Defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file the motion and his possible request for a delay in sentencing pending the decision on the motion,” Assistant Attorney General Josh Steinglass wrote in a letter to Judge Juan Merchan.
On May 30, Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying documents to hide an extramarital affair with a pornographic actress and thus not jeopardize his 2016 presidential run.
Although the case focuses on actions Trump took as a candidate and not as president, the mogul’s lawyers argued that prosecutors built the case based on evidence obtained during his presidency and therefore should have been excluded from the trial due to immunity protections, which have now been upheld by the Supreme Court.
With the delay, the sentence will not be known until after the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on July 15, meaning Trump could become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee while the sentence he will face is still unknown.
