“EI hope the UN has the moral clarity needed to address the evils we face. [em Israel]. I pledge to represent my country, to show the true face of Israel and to combat the lies and hypocrisy that we unfortunately have to deal with here in this building.”said Dannon, in the presence of Guterres.

The secretary-general, who has been highly critical of the Jewish state’s offensive in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attack on October 7, responded that for the UN “it is extremely important to have an objective relationship with Israel.”

“Our positions are clear. We have different views on many aspects, regarding the two-state solution, regarding what has been happening recently. But that does not mean that we should not maintain a constructive dialogue based on truth.”Guterres added, surprising Danon.

This is Danon’s second appointment to the United Nations post, which he held between 2015 and 2020, before returning to the Knesset (Israeli parliament) in 2022, representing Likud, the party in which he last year disputed the leadership with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“In the face of the resurgence of diplomatic terrorism, I pledge to present the truth with confidence for the good of the people of Israel and our shared future,” he said a few weeks ago, upon learning that he had been chosen to succeed the controversial former Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan.

Erdan has been the protagonist of some of the most controversial moments at the UN since the start of the Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza in October, which according to the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian enclave, controlled by Hamas, has already caused more than 40,000 deaths.

In an international context of high polarization, it remains to be seen whether Danon will adopt a stance as controversial as that of his predecessor.

Danon came under fire in November when he questioned whether European countries that had taken in refugees from the Gaza Strip were willing to work together to resolve the conflict.
