A The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) will invest $100 million to provide financial support to around 600,000 of the most vulnerable people in the country, but the increase in humanitarian needs means that even more support is needed, the organization said in a statement.

“Every time I am in Ukraine, I am struck by the resilience and determination of the people. But our support is crucial to help sustain their strength, including ensuring they are safe and warm in the harsh winter ahead, to keep their hopes alive for a better future,” Grandi said, as quoted by UNHCR, during a visit to the country.

The High Commissioner for Refugees traveled this week to Ukraine for the fifth time since February 2022 to express solidarity and call for the protection of all civilians affected by the armed conflict.

Grandi visited the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital and other areas heavily damaged by the deadly Russian strikes on July 8 in Kiev.

After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and visiting a heavily bombed power plant, Grandi handed over 10 generators to local authorities in Kharkiv to help keep critical city services operational.

Russian strikes have destroyed around 70% of Ukraine’s energy production capacity, disrupting heating and water supplies and affecting millions of people every day.

The situation “could become even more serious when temperatures drop” again next winter, the UNHCR statement said.

UNHCR’s comprehensive response plan is part of a wider UN humanitarian appeal to provide people with the support they need before the cold weather sets in.
