What were the other measures taken by Donald Trump against Colombia?
The US president, Donald Trump, ordered this Sunday to impose 25% tariffs on all Colombian products, after his counterpart in the Latin American country, Gustavo Petro, refused in the last few hours to accept two flights with deported compatriots from the US. US
Trump also announced visa restrictions for the Petro Government and his partypossible economic sanctions on the country and “inspections” on Colombian citizens and goods arriving in the US, and announced that, “in a week”, the newly imposed 25% tariffs “will rise to 50%.”
“Petro’s denial of these flights has endangered the national and public security of the United States (…) In one week, the 25% tariffs will rise to 50%,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network, in which he also announced other “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures” against Colombia.
The new Trump Administration indicated on Friday that the deportations of undocumented migrants to their countries of origin had “begun,” but Petro rejected the transfer of these people to Colombia, considering that they were not receiving “dignified” treatment.
And, according to the words of the US president himself in his last publication, among the individuals who were intended to be deported to Colombia there were “a large number of criminals.”
In this sense, alluding to issues of “national security,” he stated that he will strengthen customs inspection and border protection against “Colombian shipments (of products)” and citizens arriving from that country.
Likewise, Trump referred to Petro as “the socialist president of Colombia” who “is already very unpopular among his people.”
Sanctions against the Petro Government and reprisals against those around him
The rest of the orders imposed by the US president this Sunday against the Colombian Executive are the “travel ban and the immediate revocation of visas for Colombian Government officials and all allies and supporters.”
In addition to visa sanctions for all members of the party (Colombia Humana), as well as for their family members and supporters.
However, Trump did not report a hypothetical closure of the visa section of the US Embassy in Colombiawhich some local Colombian media had reported this Sunday.
“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations in relation to the acceptance and return of criminals who forced their access to the United States!”, concludes the US president’s publication.
For his part, Petro had stated this Sunday that he will not allow planes carrying citizens deported by the United States to enter the country if they do not receive dignified treatment.
“The US cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I disallow the entry of US planes with Colombian migrants into our territory. The US must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them” , Petro stated in his X account.

Petro had already recently questioned some of Trump’s decisions or policies, and last Tuesday he described as “dangerous” the comment that the tenant of the White House made about Latin America, a region about which the North American president said: “We don’t need them.” “.
The differences between the United States and Colombia, with whom the sending of these two flights with Colombian deportees had been agreed, also extend to other countries in the Latin American region, which have disapproved of the procedures of what, according to Trump, will be “the biggest operation of mass expulsion of aliens in the history of the United States”.
