“N“We had nothing to do with that. It’s up to the Ukrainians to talk about their military operations. Our policy has not changed on that. What we will continue to do, as we have done for the last two years, is to continue to provide Ukraine with the assistance it needs,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
The representative of Joe Biden’s administration recalled that Russia “is attacking Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom” and that the Ukrainian people have been “incredibly brave”.
“But we are not getting involved. We will continue to talk to the Ukrainians about their approach, but it is for them to speak. This is Russia’s war. It is their invasion and aggression against a sovereign country and the Ukrainians have been incredibly brave in their fight,” he said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said today that the aim of the incursion into the Russian border area of Kursk was not to “seize territory in the region” but to protect Ukrainian civilians.
“Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people’s property,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgii Tykhii said today, explaining Kiev’s position on the ongoing military operation.
Ukrainian presidential spokesman Maikhailo Pololiak also said that the incursion into the Kursk region is part of a strategy to destroy Russia’s military infrastructure.
The Ukrainian diplomatic spokesman argued that the incursions into Russian territory “are absolutely legitimate actions on the part of Ukraine, in particular within the framework of the right to self-defense provided for in the United Nations Charter.”
Tykhii also assured that the Ukrainian Army “fully respects the laws and customs of war and international humanitarian law” on Russian territory and that it only targets “military” targets.
On Monday, the Ukrainian military claimed control of 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory in the Kursk border region, where Kyiv’s forces are still maintaining an offensive after launching a large-scale surprise attack on August 6.
