O Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, is embroiled in controversy over comments he made in 2021 in which he said the policies of the Democratic Party – which includes the country’s current vice president, Kamala Harris – were “a bunch of women with cats, no children and miserable lives.” However, despite the criticism, the Republican defended his position.
“It was obviously a sarcastic comment. People are focusing so much on the sarcasm and not the substance of what I actually said.”he told conservative journalist Megyn Kelly. “The substance of what I said, Megyn, I’m sorry, but it’s true.”
The politician explained that his statements, made in an interview on Fox News at a time when he was running for the Senate, were not a criticism of people who do not have children, but rather “of the Democratic Party for having become anti-family and anti-children.”
“The simple argument I made is that having children, becoming a father, becoming a mother, I think changes your perspective in a pretty profound way.”said the 39-year-old Ohio senator. “I am arguing that our entire society has become skeptical and even hateful towards the idea of having children”.
In 2021, Vance questioned why some prominent politicians were childless and cited Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States and Trump’s presumptive opponent in November’s presidential election, who is the stepmother of her husband’s two children.
“The entire future of Democrats is controlled by childless people,” he said at the time. “How does it make sense to hand over our country to people who have no direct interest in it?”
The Republican also said that the United States was being run “by a bunch of childless women who are unhappy with their own lives and the choices they have made and so they want to make the rest of the country unhappy too.”
Among JD Vance’s critics is actress Jennifer Aniston, who has spoken openly about her difficulties in getting pregnant. “I can’t believe I’m hearing this from a potential Vice President of the United States,” the actress wrote on her Instagram stories.
“Mr. Vance, I hope your daughter is lucky enough to be able to bear children on her own. I hope she doesn’t have to go through fertility treatments as a second option, as that is something you want to take away from her as well,” he concluded.
