The Unitary Platform coalition maintains that registered more than 90,000 witnesses in a process in which he nominated diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia to confront President Nicolás Maduro, but technical difficulties have prevented the printing of the credentials necessary to exercise his function.

Political parties appoint observers during elections to ensure the correct development of the process and to report irregularities.

“We are talking about 90,000 people who have decided to accept this enormous responsibility and prepare themselves… Without proof of accreditation, I doubt that the Plan República (military deployment to guard elections) will give them access to the centers,” said Perkins Rocha, spokesman for González Urrutia’s campaign command, in a statement to the press.

Rocha asked the authorities of the National Electoral Council (CNE) for a response to a request for a meeting so that “the problem of accreditation of witnesses is resolved,” whom he described as “the watchful and qualified eyes” for “guaranteeing the transparency and legitimacy of the process.”

“The Unitary Platform fully complied with (the procedures for registering) the witnesses,” But there are “serious obstacles” to completing its accreditation, he added.

Edmundo Gonzalez replaced Maria Corina Machado

González Urrutia, 74, was nominated by the Unitary Platform instead of the former liberal deputy Maria Corina Machado, who won her primaries last year, but is disqualified from holding public office due to a sanction.

Maduro, 61, is seeking a third term that will put him in power for 18 years. He constantly accuses the opposition of a plan to claim fraud and ignore the results, which he claims will favor him.
