PTo a euphoric crowd, and after the official announcement, the Democratic candidate for the White House, Kamala Harris, and her candidate for vice president, Tim Walz, appeared together, for the first time, at a rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
At the beginning of her speech, Kamala Harris admitted that the last few weeks have been “a rollercoaster” and officially presented herself as the Democratic candidate for the November presidential elections.
“Now we have work to do. We have to get to the general election and win it.“, he said, alongside his running mate.
Then, she launched an attack on the Republican candidate for the White House and her opponent, Donald Trump: “I’ve dealt with criminals of all kinds, predators who abused women, con artists who deceived consumers, con artists who bent the rules to their own advantage. So, hear me when I say I know the Donald Trump type,” Kamala Harris said.
“This campaign is not just about fighting Donald Trump, this campaign is about fighting for the future.“, he added, stating that together they will fight for a future in which “prices that are still too high” will be lowered.
In laying out her vision for the future of the United States, advocating a fight for fundamental freedoms, Harris officially introduced her running mate, Tim Walz. “From the day I announced my candidacy, I have been preparing to find a partner who will help me build this brighter future, a leader who will help unite our nation and move us forward, a fighter for the middle class, and a patriot,” she said.
“I’m here today because I met that leader: Governor Tim Walz of the great state of Minnesota.“, he announced, also praising his family role and his professional career, namely as a teacher, and expressing the belief that Walz will be “vice president of the United States”.
Calling Tim Walz a “proud product of a middle-class family from rural Nebraska,” Harris said the governor was the “the kind of teacher and mentor that every American child dreams of having and that every child deserves“.
“He’s the kind of person who makes people feel like they belong and inspires them to dream big.”he praised. “This is the kind of vice president the United States deserves“, he reinforced.
The Democratic candidate took the opportunity to leave a message for Trump and for all those who want to “turn back the clock on our fundamental freedoms.”We will not turn back“, he said effusively, at the same time as the audience repeated.
“What kind of country do we want to live in? A country of freedom, compassion and the rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hatred?” he asked. “We are running a campaign for all Americans. And when we are elected, we will govern on behalf of all Americans.”
Walz then gave his speech, and to loud applause, he thanked the crowd and Kamala Harris.
“Thank you, Madam Vice President, for placing your trust in me. But perhaps even more, thank you for bringing back my joy.“, he said, adding that he is excited to be part of this “incredible journey.”
The governor noted that he “couldn’t be more proud” to be Harris’ teammate, who “always fought alongside the American people” and that will be “the next president of the United States of America“.
“She took on predators and con artists, dismantled transnational gangs, stood up to powerful corporate interests, and never hesitated to cross borders if it meant improving people’s lives,” Walz said. “She did all of this with a sense of joy.”
It is worth noting that the choice of Tim Walz as vice-presidential candidate was received with enthusiasm by Democrats from various wings of the party, while Republicans sought to label the governor as a radical left politician.
Although he is not widely recognized outside the borders of his home state of Minnesota, the 60-year-old has distinguished himself in recent weeks with his repeated barbs against Donald Trump and his team, which he describes as a group of “strange guys.”
Harris and Walz’s tour, which kicks off today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will continue on to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Detroit, Michigan, Durham, North Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Pennsylvania is one of the states that allowed current President Joe Biden to win the White House in 2020, and it will once again be decisive this year.
A native of Nebraska, Walz spent many years in the teaching world, primarily as a geography teacher and football coach, teaching for a few months in China shortly after the Tiananmen Square events in the spring of 1989.
Although little known outside his state’s borders, he was considered capable of helping to win over the votes of undecided voters.
Kamala Harris, 59, had just two weeks to choose her running mate after Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy amid concerns about his fitness at the age of 81.
An accelerated selection process followed, compared with the long months typically required to choose Democratic candidates for the White House.
The list of possible running mates included Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, and Mark Kelly, a former astronaut turned senator from Arizona.
Since entering the race, Kamala Harris has made up for the gap left by Joe Biden over Donald Trump, former president and new Republican candidate, in voting intentions and has seen the amounts raised for her campaign soar.
In mid-August, Harris’ candidacy will be formalized at the Democratic convention planned for Chicago.
The former president has attacked Harris, in particular, on the immigration issue and also recently accused her of having “turned black” for political reasons.
