María Teresa Aya, an international analyst for Noticias Caracol en vivo, said that, since October 7, 2023, “Israel has felt vulnerable on its borders, both in Gaza, with Hamas, and on the northern border, where the Islamist group Hezbollah operates. That is why, since last week, attacks began on beepers and then on the entire communications infrastructure to leave them isolated.”
The analyst said that “for Israel, these were preventive attacks, designed to prevent them from being attacked again from their borders. If one could give a title to this war it would be: “The war on border security.”
What is Hezbollah?
Maria Teresa Aya explained that “Hezbollah is a group that was born in 1982 with Israel’s attacks on Syrian refugees in southern Lebanon.”
According to the analyst, this Islamist group was born as a resistance movement at that time: “They aim to destroy Israel and have clashed many times. The last time was in 2006.”
Aya clarified that Hezbollah also has a political foothold: “Since 1992, it entered politics in Lebanon and since then it has participated in all presidential cabinets in Lebanon. Today, although they do not have significant political weight or majorities in Congress, through a coalition, they are able to block or push forward different proposals.”
What does Hezbollah have to do with the war in Gaza?
Maria Teresa Aya said that, at this moment, “Israel feels vulnerable on its borders and in the face of different groups such as the Houthis in Yemen; Hezbollah in Lebanon; Hamas in Gaza; and groups in Syria and Iraq, which are groups that are financed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. These are groups that Iran is training to attack Israel.”
