O The knife attack, which took place this Saturday in a shopping center in Sydney, shocked Australia, with authorities leaving it unclear what may have motivated the attacker.
The initial data revealed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anthony Cooke, at a press conference, showed eight injured and six dead, including the attacker. In turn, later, the number of fatalities increased to seven.
According to News.com.au, the seventh fatal victim is the mother of the nine-month-old baby, who succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The child was also injured after being stabbed in the stomach and underwent surgery.
The baby’s mother thus joined the four other women who died following the attack. The other of the dead was a man, BBC News reported.
Cooke further clarified that “based on preliminary investigations”, the attacker may have acted alone, adding that “there is nothing that could indicate any motive or any ideology.”
In turn, Police Commissioner Karen Webb was specifically asked by journalists whether today’s attacks were targeted, given that five of the six victims killed were women, to which she responded that she did not know. “Given the environment, it’s possible it’s random, but it’s too early to speculate,” she added.
Following the attack, the Australian Prime Minister described the attack as “a horrific act of violence indiscriminately directed at innocent people who were spending a normal Saturday, doing their shopping”.
Anthony Albanese also reiterated that the authorities have made “it clear that speculation is useless at this time”. “We must allow investigators to do their work. The motive at this stage is unknown and, of course, we will continue to update the Australian public as more information becomes known,” he said, in a press conference with journalists.
The alert for the incident was given shortly before 4:00 pm (7:00 am in Lisbon). The Westfield shopping center, in Bondi Junction, in Sydney, was immediately closed, with Australian police advising people to avoid the area.
