“Besides the number of seats that this or that party will obtain, the most important thing in my opinion will be the number of deputies willing to go further in the war in Ukraine and the number of those who will be there to put an end to it,” Orban highlighted. , in an interview with the French magazine Le Point.
“If I expect a victory for pro-peace deputies. I also hope that there will be more sovereignist deputies in favor of a Europe of nations”, added the Hungarian prime minister, a country that will assume the rotating presidency of the European Council in July and which is the most reluctant, within the European Union (EU), to support Ukraine against Russia.
According to Orbán, “the future of the sovereignist camp in Europe, as well as the right in general, is today in the hands of two women”, the leaders of the Italian and French far right, Giorgia Meloni and Marine Le Pen, respectively.
“If they can work together, in a single group or in a coalition, they will be a force for Europe. The attraction of their cooperation will be very strong. It could be enough to reshape the configuration of the European right, or even to supplant the European People’s Party ( PPE, first group in the European Parliament)”, Orban highlighted.
Her party, Fidesz, whose elected representatives are currently among the “unregistered”, should join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group where Meloni’s party has a seat, which “inspires a lot of respect in her”, defended the Hungarian ruler.
“Her task was very difficult. Badly elected, she was accused of being extremist, of not respecting the values of the European Union”, but “today, everyone respects her right-wing government, based on Christian values, in favor of democracy and which fights for European values”, he further defended.
The leader of the French far right, Marine Le Pen, aspires to a union of the European parliamentary far right, so that numbers have influence.
Together with Meloni’s ally in the Government, Matteo Salvini, from the League, Le Pen contributed to the expulsion of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from the Identity and Democracy group in the European Parliament.
Le Pen is now looking for alliances with Meloni, president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group and which will most likely be the group that will contribute the most deputies to the European Parliament.
Asked what he considers to be the greatest threat facing Europe, Orban pointed out that “the most dangerous continues to be the ideological leadership of the European Union”, denouncing the concept of “open society” and the abandonment of “national values or identities, traditional family values, not to mention Christian values.”
The elections for the European Parliament (EP) take place between June 6th and 9th in the 27 countries that make up the European Union, including Portugal.
