O The Slovenian government had approved, last week, a motion to recognize a Palestinian state and sent the proposal to Parliament for final approval, necessary for the decision to come into force.
Parliament approved the proposal today with 52 votes in favor and none against, in a chamber of 90 seats. The remaining deputies were not present for the vote.
The coalition in power decided to force its position and reject a motion from the opposition, which boycotted the session with the exception of one deputy, who abstained, reported the agency France-Presse (AFP).
The Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) of former Prime Minister Janez Jansa had presented on Monday a proposal aimed at organizing a consultative referendum.
This maneuver was supposed to delay the vote for 30 days, according to parliamentary rules.
But, against all expectations, the President of Parliament, Urska Klakocar Zupancic, estimated today that the opposition had “abused the referendum mechanism”, stating that the 30-day deadline only applied to bills and not to decrees.
During a chaotic six-hour session, interrupted several times for procedural reasons, the motion was rejected by a large majority and then the decree was approved.
Jansa had already accused the center-left coalition in power of “violating procedure”, leaving the chamber together with his party’s deputies.
The Government had sent the decree to Parliament for approval last week, speeding up the procedure to ratify the decision ahead of Sunday’s European elections.
A political calculation denounced by Janez Jansa, close to the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to the text of their motion, such recognition “causes long-term harm to Slovenia by supporting the terrorist organization Hamas”.
On the contrary, Liberal Prime Minister Robert Golob believes this decision “sends a message of peace”.
“We believe that the time has come for the entire world to join forces for a two-state solution that brings peace to the Middle East”, he stressed.
Slovenia’s decision comes days after Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized a Palestinian state, an initiative that was condemned by Israel.
Previously, only seven members of the 27-nation European Union officially recognized a Palestinian state.
Five of these are former Eastern Bloc countries that announced recognition in 1988, like Cyprus, before joining the EU. Sweden’s recognition came in 2014.
On October 7 last year, Israel declared a war in the Gaza Strip to “eradicate” Hamas after it, hours earlier, carried out an attack of unprecedented proportions on Israeli territory, killing 1,194 people, most of them civilians.
Since 2007 in power in Gaza and classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel, Hamas has also taken 251 hostages, 120 of whom remain in captivity and 41 have died, according to the most recent report from the Israeli Army.
The war, which today entered its 242nd day and continues to threaten to spread throughout the entire Middle East region, has so far left 36,550 dead in the Gaza Strip, more than 83,000 injured and around 10,000 missing, most of them civilians, presumably trapped. in the rubble after almost eight months of war, according to updated figures from local authorities.
