“O Hamas is an ideology. An ideology cannot be eliminated. To say that we are going to make Hamas disappear is to throw dust in people’s eyes,” said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in an interview with Israeli television station 13.

With the Israeli government appearing divided for weeks over the future of the Gaza Strip, Hagari added: “If an alternative is not foreseen, in the end, we will have Hamas” in power in the Gaza Strip.

In a quick reaction, with a laconic text, the government reacted: “The destruction of Hamas’ government and military capabilities is one of the war objectives defined by the security cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu”, according to a text from the office this one.

Shortly afterwards, it was the army’s turn to react, with a statement in which it maintained that its spokesman had “in his statements […] spoke of the destruction of Hamas as an ideology and idea”, adding that his statements had been “clear and explicit” and that “any other interpretation would be taking things out of context”.

When the US seeks to conclude a truce that allows the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of Palestinians held by Israel, Netanyahu keeps saying that he will continue the war until the elimination of Hamas.
