“O President [da África do Sul] Cyril Ramaphosa congratulated Keir Starmer on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” the South African presidency said in a statement, quoted by the Efe news agency.

“President Ramaphosa said he looks forward to working with Prime Minister Starmer to enhance the strong and historic relationship between South Africa and the United Kingdom,” he added.

Kenyan President William Ruto, on behalf of his government and “the Kenyan people”, also conveyed his “warmest congratulations” to the newly appointed British Prime Minister.

“His election is a testament to the deep yearning of the people of the United Kingdom for progressive politics (…) I look forward to working with Prime Minister Starmer to advance our bilateral cooperation on trade, politics and defence,” Ruto said on his X social media account.

The presidents of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, also posted similar messages on X, Efe said.

The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, won Thursday’s general election in the United Kingdom, ending 14 years of Conservative governments.

The Conservative Party lost the election, winning just 121 seats in the lower House of Commons, compared with 412 for Labour, which returned to power after 14 years of centre-right rule.
