EThis is the second time in the same week that Romania has found debris of this kind and the Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, said today, in a statement, that the findings indicate that there was “an absolutely unacceptable violation of the sovereign airspace of Romania, an ally of NATO, with real risks to the security of Romanian citizens in the area.”
Iohannis added that he had a telephone conversation with the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, to inform the Alliance leader about the new discovery of ‘drone’ parts (unmanned aerial devices).
It was not clear whether Romanian authorities had determined when or from where the drone was launched.
Stoltenberg wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that there was “no indication of intent” to target the NATO member country, but said the findings “are destabilizing.”
“I welcome the United States’ decision to send more F-16s for NATO air policing,” the representative said, adding: “We stand in solidarity with Romania.”
The Romanian Defense Ministry said the fragments were found approximately two and a half kilometers (1.5 miles) southeast of the Romanian village of Plauru, which is situated on the opposite side of the Danube River from the Ukrainian port of Izmail.
There was no immediate comment from Russia.
Russia persistently attacked the port of Izmail this week, compromising Ukraine’s ability to export grain to world markets.
The proximity of the attacks caused some Romanian citizens living nearby to fear that the war could spread to their country.
“The area was protected by the military and the elements discovered will be collected for analysis and technical expertise,” the ministry said today, adding that it will continue investigations in the vicinity of Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
“Within NATO, Romania is very well defended and benefits from the strongest security guarantees in our entire history”, added Iohannis.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
