A BBC reports that more than a hundred police officers decided to lay down their weapons, following the case of a police officer accused of fatally shooting Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old black man, in September 2022, which relaunched the debate on racism in London police.
Last Thursday, officer Chris Kaba appeared in court accused of murder.
According to the London Metropolitan Police, police officers laid down their weapons because they were concerned about the impact that the accusation could have on the professional class.
In response to this decision, the Ministry of Defense offered support from the British military to act in place of police officers, as a contingency measure and only if necessary.
The British Minister of the Interior, Suella Braverman, has already expressed her “full support” for the armed agents who “risk their lives for the safety of everyone”, wrote the agency France-Presse.
Chris Kaba, 24, was shot dead by a police officer in south-west London on September 5 as he was being chased by a patrol car. The man, who was unarmed, was injured and died that night in hospital.
The family called for an investigation into the death, questioning in a statement whether Chris Kaba would have died “if he hadn’t been black.” The officer who fired the shot was suspended and is now charged with murder.
