Sending British troops to Ukraine? “It won’t be for the here and now”

O UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak clarified this Sunday that the sending of British troops to train soldiers in Ukraine will not be “now”. The clarification came after Defense Minister Grant Shapps admitted the possibility of “bringing the training closer” and taking it “to Ukraine”.

“What the Minister of Defense was saying was that perhaps it will be possible, one day in the future, for us to do some training in Ukraine”Sunak told journalists in Manchester, cited by the Reuters news agency.

“But this is for the long term, not the here and now. There are no British soldiers to send to fight in the current conflict.”he stressed.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the newly appointed British Defense Minister stated that he intended to send British troops to train soldiers in Ukraine, in addition to the training of Ukrainian soldiers that is already taking place in the United Kingdom and other Western countries.

Russia reacted to the statements, with the vice-president of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, stating that the transfer of British troops to Ukraine would make the UK military “legal targets”.

“A newly minted idiot – the British Defense Minister – decided to transfer English-language training courses for Ukrainian soldiers to Ukraine’s own territory,” he said.

“In other words, transforming their instructors into legal targets for our Armed Forces. Knowing full well that they will be mercilessly destroyed. And no longer as mercenaries, but precisely as British NATO specialists”, he shot.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia began with the aim, according to Vladimir Putin, of “denazifying” and demilitarizing Ukraine for Russia’s security. The operation was condemned by most of the international community.

The UN confirmed that almost ten thousand civilians died and more than 17 thousand were injured in the war, stressing that the real numbers will be much higher and can only be known when there is access to surrounded areas or areas under intense fighting.
