Dan Gillerman, former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, reiterated, this Wednesday, the country’s criticism of António Guterres. The diplomat argued that it is time for the UN secretary-general to “go away” and considered that the Portuguese was, “possibly”, the “weakest” leader the organization “has ever had”.
This position was shared in statements to Sky News. Gillerman also commented on the explanations given by Guterres today, after the controversy sparked by his speech on Tuesday, and considered that they came “too late”.
“What he said yesterday was very, very clear. In a completely ridiculous and outrageous statement, he actually justified the actions of those horrible Hamas killers“, he shot.
“I think Guterres is possibly the weakest and lowest secretary-general the UN has ever had and after a statement like this, it’s time to go.”he further defended.
On Tuesday, at the opening of a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, in an intervention in English, António Guterres considered that “it is also important to recognize that the Hamas attacks did not happen in a vacuum”, adding that “the people Palestinian has been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.”
António Guterres argued that “the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the terrible attacks by Hamas”, just as “these terrible attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people”.
At the beginning of his speech, the UN Secretary-General said that he “unequivocally condemns Hamas’ horrific and unprecedented acts of terror in Israel” and said that “nothing can justify the deliberate killing, wounding and abduction of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets”.
At the same meeting, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, accused António Guterres of being out of touch with reality and showing understanding for the October 7 Hamas attack with a “shocking speech”.
On the social network Israeli Army Radio.
Following this, António Guterres ended up speaking out “shocked by the misinterpretations” of the statements he made on Tuesday and denied having justified Hamas’ acts of terror.
