ATurkish authorities detained 32 people suspected of having links to the extremist group Islamic State (IS), who were allegedly planning attacks on synagogues and churches, as well as the Iraqi embassy, the Turkish state agency reported today.
The suspects, including three alleged top IS militants, were detained in dawn raids in nine provinces of Turkey, Anadolu Agency reported, citing security sources it did not identify.
They were detained in a joint operation by the intelligence agency and the police.
The arrests come a week after police captured 304 suspected IS militants in raids across Turkey in what appeared to be a security operation related to New Year festivities.
The Islamic State group carried out a series of deadly attacks in Turkey, including a shooting at an Istanbul nightclub on January 1, 2017, which killed 39 people during New Year celebrations.
