“It is a matter of pride that the (Iranian) Strategic Navy is active in international and oceanic waters, despite the conspiracies of enemies,” said the commander of the Iranian Naval Forces, Admiral Shahrami Irani, during the ceremony that marked the beginning of the mission, in the city of Bandar Abbas.
Irani said that it is about “transferring naval experience and training to Naval Forces cadets so that they can solemnly carry out the Navy’s missions in the near future”, reported the Tasnim news agency, linked to the Revolutionary Guard.
The ships in question are the amphibious Tonb and the support ship Bushehr.
The specific destination of the two ships was not indicated.
The sending of this mission comes in the context of tensions in the Red Sea, where Yemeni Huthi fighters are attacking merchant marine vessels in retaliation for Israel’s war in Gaza.
In response, the United States and the United Kingdom carried out bombings against Yemen without managing to put an end to the attacks in the Red Sea.
Iran, an ally of the Huthis, has already sent a warship to the Red Sea at the beginning of the month, the Alborz, built in 1969.
In the middle of the month, the Iranian Navy seized the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker St Nikolas, owned by the Greek shipping company Empire Navigation, in the Sea of Oman.
This ship – which was still sailing under the name “Suez Rajan” – was involved in litigation with the United States Department of Justice, which ordered the seizure of one million barrels of Iranian crude oil that it was transporting.
