O Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, got involved in a small controversy with the former French Environment Minister, Ségolène Royal, and not even socialism prevented the exchange of pennants, which caused people to talk. The reason? Spanish tomatoes.
But, after all, how did it all start? At a time when farmers are protesting across Europe, particularly in France, where demonstrations have been taking place for weeks, Ségolène Royal, who was also a presidential candidate in the 2007 elections, made harsh accusations against farmers in the neighboring country.
In a television program on Thursday, the former minister accused the Spanish of falsifying their organic products and of not respecting “French rules”.
“Have you tried the supposedly organic Spanish tomatoes? They are inedible. The Spanish ‘bio’ is a fake ‘bio’ and does not respect French standards”said, in statements on BMFTV, the socialist, former companion of former president François Hollande.
These statements did not go down well with Pedro Sánchez who decided to respond with an invitation to Ségolène Royal. “I believe that Mrs. Royal hasn’t had the luck yet to taste the Spanish tomato”, he began by saying. “I invite you to come to Spain to try any of the Spanish tomato varieties and you will see that the Spanish tomato is unbeatable,” she added.
It should be noted that farmers in France, the largest agricultural producer in the EU, have been on the streets for several weeks and blocking roads across the country. You Protests have spread to other countries in recent daysincluding Greece, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Romania, Spain and Portugal.
Yesterday, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, called for European measures in favor of farmers, as “tangible” simplifications of the Common Agricultural Policy and a special force to “prevent” “unfair competition” between Member States.
