The Embraer E-195 of the Greek company Marathon Airlines, which operates several aircraft on behalf of the Serbian national carrier, was destined, on Sunday afternoon, for the German city of Dusseldorf.
The aircraft monitoring service Flightradar24 indicated that flight JU324 did not have enough distance for a safe take-off.
During take-off, the left side of the aircraft was seriously damaged, when the landing system was hit by elements on the runway opposite the one being used and located relatively close to a busy highway.
Video footage and photos of the plane released in the meantime show a large hole and a tear in the fuselage at the base of the left wing, with the tail area also damaged.
Firefighters threw foam on the fuselage, given the risk of fuel spillage.
After managing to gain height, the plane was still in the air for about an hour before landing safely at Belgrade airport, local media reported, citing testimonies from passengers.
After being escorted off the aircraft, AirSerbia informed the passengers that the return was due to technical reasons and that their lives were not at risk.
Due to this incident, the airport was closed for some time and planes were diverted to other airports.
