UA group of unknown armed men opened fire on two men who were in a vehicle parked near the South African academic institution this afternoon, spokeswoman Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told the local press.
“The two occupants were killed. During the shooting, a bus carrying university students was caught in the crossfire,” he said.
A South African police spokeswoman said two students were also shot, one of them was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was transported to a nearby hospital.
According to police, the motive for the shooting is under investigation.
In a statement, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) highlighted that “none of the Wits students or staff were injured” in the incident that occurred in Braamfontein, adding that “it may be related to violence between taxi operators” and underlining that “the university’s security services are also on site assisting the emergency services and police”.
According to several media outlets, the incident occurred in front of the Wits Art Museum, completely “paralyzing” the Braamfontein area, in the center of Johannesburg, the economic capital of South Africa.
South African authorities closed the streets of the city center in the perimeter where the attack took place.
The University of the Witwatersrand and Camões, Institute of Cooperation and Language, created Camões – Centro de Língua Portuguesa (CLP), in Johannesburg, in 2002.
The CLP is part of the School of Literature, Language and Media of the Faculty of Humanities and aims to “promote the Portuguese language and Portuguese-speaking cultures on the African continent, as well as the teaching of Portuguese in South Africa”, according to the Camões Institute.
