“O United States Central Command and the Royal Jordanian Air Force carried out a combined humanitarian aid drop in northern Gaza on March 5 at 2:30 p.m. [hora local] to provide essential aid to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict,” the military command said in a statement.
According to the United Nations, hunger is “almost inevitable” in Gaza, while the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that it had witnessed horrific situations of children dying of hunger in the north of the territory during a recent aid mission in two hospitals .
“We continue to plan aid delivery missions”, continued the US military command for the Middle East (Centcom), and when the population of the Gaza Strip, more than two million inhabitants, is faced with serious food shortages, water and medicines.
A Pentagon spokeswoman, Sabrina Singh, said on Monday that between 30 and 120 trucks sent aid to Gaza daily over the past week.
“It is clearly insufficient to feed the population”, he declared, specifying that the air drops are intended to complement but not replace the aid made available by land.
The United States, Israel’s main ally, began airdrops of aid on Saturday to Gaza, where Israel’s incessant bombings have continued since Hamas’ unprecedented and violent attack on October 7.
The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,160 people, including more than 400 soldiers, according to official Israeli data.
In retaliation, Israel promised to “eliminate” Hamas, in power in Gaza since 2007, which it considers a “terrorist organization” like the United States and the European Union.
The Israeli offensive has already caused at least 30,631 deaths, mostly civilians, and at least 70,000 injuries.
Around 8,000 bodies remain under the rubble, according to local authorities.
UN agencies also indicate that 156 employees have been killed in Gaza since October 7th.
The Commission to Protect Journalists, an association based in New York, revealed that 70 of the 99 journalists and media workers killed in 2023 were victims of “Israeli attacks on Gaza”.
The Israeli offensive has also destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure and close to two million people have been forced to leave their homes, almost all of the enclave’s 2.3 million inhabitants.
The population of the Gaza Strip is also faced with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, due to the collapse of hospitals, the outbreak of epidemics and shortages of drinking water, food, medicine and electricity.
Since October 7, more than 400 Palestinians have also been killed by the Israeli Army and by settler attacks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories occupied by the Jewish State. There were also 6,650 arrests and more than 3,000 injuries.
