PAt least five people died and ten others were injured this Friday, after being hit by air aid packages that fell in the Al Shati camp, in Gaza city.
Local journalist Khader Al Zaanoun witnessed the incident, which he reported to CNN International, however, he was unable to confirm which country was responsible for the airdrop.
Muhammad Al-Sheikh, director of the Emergency Care Department at Al Shifa Medical Complex, in Gaza City, confirmed that five people died in the incident and that, of the total of ten injured, some are in serious condition.
Last weekend, the United States and Jordan began sending humanitarian aid by air to the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday, the joint operation between the two countries allowed the sending of more than 36 thousand meals.
On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the European Commission’s Community Executive for Crisis Management, Balazs Ujvari, said that Brussels is “very carefully analyzing the possibility” of delivering assistance by air.
The conflict between Hamas and Israel escalated on October 7, 2023, when fighters from the Palestinian Islamist movement – in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 and classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, United States and Israel – carried out an attack on Israeli territory of unprecedented proportions since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, leaving 1,163 dead, most of them civilians, and around 250 hostages, 130 of whom remain in captivity, according to the most recent report by Israeli authorities.
In retaliation, Israel declared a war to “eradicate” Hamas, which began with cuts to the supply of food, water, electricity and fuel in the Gaza Strip and daily bombings, followed by a ground offensive in the north of the territory, which later extended South.
The conflict has so far left more than 30,000 dead in the Gaza Strip, more than 71,000 injured and around 8,000 missing buried in the rubble, most of them civilians, according to the latest report from local authorities.
