UA man set himself on fire in the area designated for protests outside the New York courthouse this Friday, where former US president Donald Trump is on trial.
CNN reporters at the scene said they saw a man engulfed in flames for about three minutes, according to Reuters.
That outlet also reported that the man threw leaflets that are now being collected by authorities.
At least one person used a fire extinguisher to try to put out the fire, while a paramedic tried to help the man.
NBC News said, citing authorities, that the man was placed in an ambulance, which would transport him to a hospital unit.
The incident occurred after the selection of 12 people (with six other alternatives) to join the jury for the trial, paving the way for the proceedings to begin next week.
At issue are payments of 130 thousand dollars (122,037 euros) that the former president’s company made to his then personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. He, in turn, handed over the amount to pornographic film star ‘Stormy’ Daniels, on behalf of Trump, to buy his silence in the face of allegations that he had had a sexual encounter with the tycoon, a month before the presidential election in 2016.
The former president pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and also denied having had any meeting with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
Trump was also criminally charged in Washington and Georgia for his attempt to reverse the 2020 election result, as well as in Florida, where he illegally retained confidential documents after abandoning the post of head of state in 2021.
Still, this is the only case that is expected to go to trial before the November 5 elections, in which the tycoon intends to face the current president, Joe Biden.
