NIn a post on the social network Facebook, Oleksandr Syrsky wrote that Russia is “actively attacking along the entire front line, achieving tactical successes in several sectors.”
“In an attempt to seize the strategic initiative and break the front line, the enemy concentrated its efforts in several sectors, thus creating a significant advantage in terms of forces and means,” he explained.
The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army last week reported “violent fighting”, describing a “dynamic” situation, with certain positions controlled by one side and then the other, several times during the same day.
However, according to Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukrainian troops are managing to “improve their tactical position” in certain areas.
Among the areas where the fighting is being most intense is the Kupiansk sector, in the northeast of the country, where the Russians “had partial successes, but were stopped”.
In the Kramatorsk sector (east), Russian troops are on the offensive to take the city of Chassiv Yar, but the “most complicated situation” is in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhové area, where “fierce fighting is taking place”.
In turn, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army indicated that Ukrainian troops withdrew from the cities of Berdychi, Semenivka and Novomykhailivka.
“”To reinforce defense in these sectors, brigades that have recovered their combat capacity are deployed to replace units that suffered losses”, he explained.
Oleksandr Syrsky also said that there is a “tense situation” in the south of the country.
Due to a lack of men and ammunition, Ukrainian forces have faced a slow advance since the fall of the fortress town of Avdiïvka in February.
The commander-in-chief of Ukrainian forces, Oleksandr Syrsky, had already admitted this month that the situation on the eastern front had “deteriorated significantly”.
On Monday, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, argued that the situation will worsen between May and June, which he classified as a “difficult period” for Ukraine.
Last week, the situation worsened following the sudden advance of the Russian army towards the village of Ocheretine, a strategic high point northwest of Avdivka, in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk, and the capture of several villages.
Furthermore, they continue to advance towards Chasiv Yar, whose eventual capture would allow the Russian army to threaten the Ukrainian fortresses of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, essential for control of the Donetsk region.
