“Preview of heavy rains, tomorrow [quarta-feira]in areas of Rio Grande do Sul. The total volume of rain can reach 50 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours, with winds of up to 60 km/h”, reads a statement released by the region’s National Institute of Meteorology.
The governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, also took to social media today to warn that “large floods are expected” in the coming days.
The heavy rains that began 10 days ago gave a small respite on Monday and today, but caused an unprecedented rise in river levels, causing enormous damage in several locations and flooding a large part of Porto Alegre, the state capital.
In addition to the almost 100 deaths, Civil Defense has so far confirmed 131 missing and 362 injured.
The rains affected more than 1.4 million inhabitants of 397 municipalities, two thirds of the state’s total, who suffer from a lack of food, medicine and basic services such as electricity and water.
Rio Grande do Sul was hit hardest by the rains, with at least 90 fatalities, while the neighboring state of Santa Catarina recorded one death.
Brazilian authorities are focusing on rescuing survivors who are still isolated, while working to guarantee energy and water for the population.
