Ahe initial projections at the polls cited by the Spanish media give a victory to Salvador Illa’s Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), which is expected to win between 37 and 40 seats in the Catalan parliament.
The three independentist parties, which have had a majority in parliament for 14 years and come together to always make independentist governments viable, even when none of them receive the most votes, will obtain between 58 and 74 deputies, according to polls published by the public television channels TVE and TV3 and by the newspaper El Periodico de Catalunya.
These are the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC, left, currently at the head of the regional government), Together for Catalonia (JxCat, right-wing) and the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP, left-wing).
According to polls, JxCat, owned by former president of the regional government Carles Puigdemont, will elect between 30 and 36 deputies; ERC, by Pere Agaronès, will get between 21 and 27, and CUP, by Laia Estrada, will get six to nine.
If the three parties elect the maximum number of deputies assigned to them in the polls, they will achieve an absolute majority that could bring Puigdemont back to power, after more than six years outside Spain, to escape justice following the unilateral declaration of independence in 2017.
Puigdemont called for independence unity during the campaign, but the ERC did not commit to a new coalition, after disagreements over the last year and a half with JxCat.
The ERC also did not exclude, nor commit to, an alliance with the socialists, which Salvador Illa admitted during the campaign.
The polls released today at 8pm (7pm in Lisbon) also all confirm the entry into the Catalan parliament of a new independence party, the Catalan Alliance, an extreme right-wing formation that could elect between one and seven deputies, with which there would be more certainty of an “independence front” with an absolute majority.
However, during the campaign, ERC, JxCat and CUP committed, in a written document, not to negotiate or accept the votes of deputies from the Catalan Alliance to reach the government, as they are far-right.
If these studies are confirmed, Catalonia will become the only parliament in Spain to have two far-right parties represented – the other is Vox, which is expected to maintain the 11 deputies it already had.
The studies released today are not polls carried out at the polls this Sunday, but averages of polls carried out over the last week and, in some cases, a mixture of both.
The Catalan parliament has 135 deputies who are currently distributed across eight parties: Socialist (33), ERC (33), JxCat (32), Vox (11, far right), CUP (nine), Comuns Podemos (eight, left) , Citizens (six, liberals) and PP (three, right).
According to polls, Cidadãos will disappear from parliament, the PP will increase the number of deputies, while Comuns Somar (formerly Comuns Podemos) and Vox are expected to maintain parliamentary groups similar to those they currently have.
