A leader of the far-left Spanish party Somar, Yolanda Díaz, insisted this Monday on the resignation of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, after he celebrated the title won in the Women’s World Cup with a kiss on the mouth to one of the players, Jenni Hermoso.
“We continue to demand the resignation of Rubiales, who harassed and attacked a woman. His apologies are of no use”, argued the interim vice president of Spain, in statements to the Spanish press from Congress.
The political leader explained her position demanding “compliance” with the Sports Law and the activation of the protocols of the said Federation in terms of sexist acts.
It is important to remember that, on Sunday, at the very moment of awarding the medals of the winners and losers of the final of the competition, Luis Rubiales greeted the athlete Jenni Hermoso, 33 years old, with a kiss on the mouth, in the middle of the lawn of Stadium Australia, in Sydney .
The incident led to many unfavorable reactions to the president of the RFEF, particularly from Spanish ministers. Some of whom, like Yolanda Díaz, called for the director’s resignation.
Luis Rubiales has already acknowledged the unhappiness of the act, through a video where he addresses a public apology for this “incident” that he said he had “to regret”. And he explained: “There is a magnificent relationship between the two, as well as with other [atletas]. But I was certainly wrong, I have to admit. In a moment of maximum effusiveness, without any bad intention or bad faith, what happened happened, in a very spontaneous way”.
On the sidelines of the incident, Yolanda Díaz also addressed her congratulations to the “world champions” for the “lesson in feminism”, following their victory against England, by 1-0, which earned the Spaniards the conquest of the World Cup of Women’s Football.
“They showed us many things about equality, not just in sport and football. They showed us that there is a lot to do in our country, that there is a lot to do to make us equal, men and women”, he also pointed out.
