A The explosion occurred during a Catholic mass at the Mindanao State University (MSU) gymnasium in Marawi, the country’s largest Muslim city, said regional police chief Allan Nobleza.

“We are investigating whether it was a homemade explosive device or a grenade,” said Nobleza.

MSU in a statement condemned the “act of violence”, suspended classes and highlighted greater security for the university campus.

“We are in solidarity with our Christian community and with all the people affected by this tragedy”, declared the university in the note.

Photographs published on the Lanao del Sur provincial government’s Facebook page show Governor Mamintal Adiong visiting the “victims injured in the bomb attack” at a medical center.

The attack came three days after the Philippine army killed 11 Islamist militants from the Dawlah Islamiya organization in Mindanao.

The army said on Saturday that the organization was planning attacks in another province of the country.

Allan Nobleza said that the police are investigating whether today’s attack is linked to that military operation.
