OThe two US officials, who asked not to be quoted due to the sensitivity of the issue, stressed that Washington’s policy remains that Ukraine should not use weapons from the United States to attack within Russian borders.
According to the online newspaper Politico, which broke the news first hand, the White House decided, in recent days, to give Ukraine “flexibility” to defend itself from attacks on the border near Kharkiv.
“In practice, Ukraine can now use weapons provided by the United States of America to shoot down Russian missiles heading towards Kharkiv, on troops that are gathering near the border or to attack bombers that are dropping bombs on Ukrainian territory”, it can be said. read the Politico news, which cites four sources, also without identifying them.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today asked the Allies to review the restrictions placed on Western weapons used by Ukraine on Russian territory, suggesting that the limitations could be “reconsidered” given the evolution of the war.
“We have to recognize that the Allies are providing many different types of military support to Ukraine. Some of them have placed restrictions on the use of these weapons, some of them have not placed any restrictions on the weapons they have provided to Ukraine, these are national decisions, but I think, at the same time, In light of the way this war evolved compared to the beginning, when almost all the fighting took place on Ukrainian territory, […] I believe the time has come to reconsider some of these restrictions”, declared the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Speaking at a conference on NATO’s 75th anniversary, which precedes the informal meeting of the heads of diplomacy of the Atlantic Alliance in the Czech city of Prague, Jens Stoltenberg recalled that, two years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “most of the heavy fighting has took place along the border between Russia and Ukraine”, with the front line being “the Russian side of the border”.
The official stressed that the reassessment of this easing of restrictions should take place to “allow Ukrainians to defend themselves effectively”.
Last week, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, called for the country to use weapons made available by the West to target military positions on Russian territory.
The issue is far from consensual and there are several countries in the political-military bloc that want to continue limiting the use of Western weapons to Ukrainian defense on their own territory.
Attacks on Russian territory with Western-supplied weaponry could be interpreted by the Kremlin as direct involvement in the conflict and lead to escalation.
