And Baltimore city bridge, on the east coast of the United States, collapsed on Tuesday after a boat collided with it, causing 20 people, who were in several vehicles, fell into the water.
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) reported that a boat had collided with the bridge.
According to images captured by video surveillance cameras, A container ship crashed into a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing a large portion of the steel structure to fall into the Patapsco River.
In the images you can see lights on the bridge, apparently from vehicles, before it deforms and falls in sections.
“We know that up to 20 individuals may be in the Patapsco River at this time, as well as several vehicles,” Kevin Cartwight of the Baltimore Fire Department told CNN.
“We believe that vehicles and possibly a semi-trailer fell into the water”Cartwight also told the Baltimore Sun newspaper. “The entire bridge” has collapsed, he said.
“Pray for those affected”
A Baltimore police spokeswoman also told the US channel that it was possible that several people had fallen into the river.
“I can confirm that at 1:35 a.m., Baltimore City Police received notification of a partial collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and that there may be workers in the water,” said spokeswoman Niki Fennoy.
The 2.6 km long, four-lane bridge crosses the Patapsco River southwest of Baltimore, an industrial and port city on the US Atlantic coast.
It is located on a main highway that connects this city with the capital, Washington.
Marine traffic website MarineTraffic says a Singapore-flagged container ship called the “Dali” stopped under the bridge early on Tuesday.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Chief Johnny Olszewski Jr. said rescue efforts are underway.
“Pray for those affected,” Olszewski said on the social network X.
