Donald Trump said this Friday, January 17, that his inauguration as president of USAon January 20, will be held indoors due to the expected freezing weather.
“There’s a blast of arctic wind sweeping across the country,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social app. “Therefore, I have directed that the inaugural address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, be delivered in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol,” he added.
According to The Weather Channel, the temperature in Washington next Monday, January 20, will have a maximum of -4 degrees.
The dramatic change of plan means that Trump will not be on the steps of the Capitol overlooking the National Mallwhich traditionally hosts a large crowd to welcome new presidents.
The last time a president was sworn in indoors was Ronald Reagan in 1985who also moved the ceremony to the ornate Capitol Rotunda due to dangerously cold weather.
The temperature in Washington on Monday is forecast to be well below freezing and wind will contribute to the cold.
In his post, Trump stated that “several dignitaries and guests” will attend events inside the Capitol, including prayers, Trump’s inaugural address and the singing of the anthem.
However, the Republican, who has built a political brand around organizing large rallies, said his supporters could watch the event live from Washington’s Capital One sports stadium, and that he would go there afterwards.
Trump, 78, noted that the ceremonies in the Rotunda “will be a very beautiful experience for everyone, and especially for the large television audience!”
“On Monday we will open Capital One Arena to LIVE watch this historic event and host the presidential parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One after my inauguration,” he added.
