O President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, appointed new heads of the Army, Navy and Air Force, about an hour after denouncing that “irregular mobilizations” were taking place in some of the country’s Army units.
With the cry “the coup plotters will not pass”, the Bolivian president swore in the new commanders of the three branches of the Armed Forces, as seen in a video on social media. In this way, the president dismissed the senior military commanders who attempted the “coup d’état”.
After being named the new head of the Army, José Wilson Sánchez spoke at the presidential palace in La Paz, ordering all military forces to demobilize and return to their battalions. “I order everyone who is mobilized to return to their units. Nobody wants the images we are seeing on the streets,” he said, in a video also posted on social media.
The management of the largest union in Bolivia condemned the action and declared an indefinite strike by social and trade union organizations in La Paz in defense of the government.
Tensions have been rising in Bolivia ahead of the 2025 general elections, with former left-wing president Evo Morales planning to run against former ally Arce, creating a major rift in the ruling socialist party and broader political uncertainty.
Many do not want the return of Morales, who ruled from 2006 to 2019, when he was ousted amid widespread protests and replaced by an interim conservative government. Arce then won the election in 2020.
