“CAs mediators in the ongoing negotiations to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages and detainees, Qatar, the United States and Egypt jointly call on Hamas and Israel to finalize the agreement in accordance with the principles outlined by the President of the USA, Joe Biden”, states the joint statement shared by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its X social network account.
The mediators stated that “these principles bring together the demands of all parties involved in the agreement that serves multiple interests and will bring immediate relief to both the affected Gaza population and the affected hostages and their families.”
“This agreement provides a roadmap for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the crisis”, concludes the note cited by the Spanish news agency EFE.
The three countries have been mediating the conflict, asking both sides to honor the three-phase agreement that was announced by Joe Biden on Friday.
Biden explained that the first phase of the agreement would last six weeks and would include a “total and complete ceasefire”, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held by Hamas, including the Americans , women, the elderly and the injured, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Humanitarian assistance would be increased, with 600 trucks allowed to enter the Palestinian enclave every day.
The second phase would include the release of all remaining living hostages and Israeli forces would abandon their positions throughout the Gaza Strip.
Finally, the third phase requires the beginning of a major reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which is facing decades of work due to the devastation caused by the war.
However, the Israeli authorities have already reaffirmed today that they will not accept a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip until the objectives that led them to develop this war are met, that is, the guarantee of the total elimination of “military and governmental capabilities of Hamas” in the Palestinian enclave.
Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip following a deadly Hamas attack on October 7, in which Palestinian militants invaded southern Israeli territory, killed nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took around 250 hostage.
The large-scale Israeli retaliatory operation in the Palestinian enclave has already killed more than 36,000 people, most of them civilians, according to the local Hamas government, and has left the territory in a serious humanitarian crisis.
