O The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said today that the fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the grassy hills managed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the nation’s leading nuclear weapons science and technology centers.

However, the authorities guarantee that the research center is not under immediate threat from the fire, which by late afternoon today had already destroyed around 52 square kilometers, but is, however, partially under control.

Authorities ordered some residents to leave the area and created evacuation centers, according to the Associated Press (AP).

“The strong winds and dry grass made it difficult for firefighters to contain themselves,” the operations center said in a Facebook post cited by the AP.

Interstate 580, which connects the San Francisco Bay Area to San Joaquin County in central California, was partially closed, as was SR 132, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, San Joaquin County emergency services issued an evacuation order for areas west of the California Aqueduct and established a temporary evacuation point in Tracy.

The maximum temperature forecast for Tracy today was 29ºC, with no rain forecast, but the National Weather Service warned that the situation would worsen, with “dangerously hot conditions” expected, with highs between 39.4ºC C and 42.2º C for the end of the week.
