“NAs part of the pursuit of those involved in the armed attack on the United States embassy in the Awkar area, a patrol from the Intelligence Department and an army unit carried out searches in several houses in the villages of Souairi and Majdal Anjar (east)”, announced the army in a statement.
During the raids in the border area with Syria, Lebanese security forces detained three of the shooter’s relatives and two other people, a Lebanese and a Syrian, also suspected of being related to the attacker, according to the statement.
The man who shot at the US embassy, a Syrian citizen identified by the initials QF, was detained at the scene this morning after being shot and injured by security forces, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
According to local channel Al Jadeed, the attacker underwent surgery and is stable.
Among the other detainees is one of his brothers, who was found in possession of several explosive devices and bomb-making materials.
No US embassy employee was injured in the attack, nor was there any material damage to the facilities, as confirmed by the diplomatic mission itself on its account on the social network X.
This is the second incident of this type to occur since last September, when other individuals also fired small arms in the vicinity of the US installations, without any casualties being reported.
Washington is building a large complex to increase the size of its embassy.
The dimensions of the fortified complex sparked controversy in Lebanon, a country measuring just 10,000 square kilometers, with questions being raised about the motivations for such a reform.
