“AND I need to give maximum political impetus to carry out a new operational strategy against trafficking in human beings that finally aims to implement concrete initiatives aimed at blocking departures at the source”said Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in a statement, cited by Efe.

In addition to Piantedosi and the commissioner, the conversation included interventions from her counterparts from Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, from France, Gérald Darmanin, and from Germany, Nancy Faeser.

According to the Italian executive, “during the conversation, a common desire to address the migration issue in a concrete and operational way emerged, with a view to the next meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), scheduled for Brussels, on September 28”.

This Sunday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, travels to the Italian island of Lampedusa, following a request to this effect from the Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, following the arrival of more than 10,000 migrants in just three days.

The French Interior Minister will also travel “in the next few days” to Italy to meet his counterpart Matteo Piantedosi, the French presidency announced today, cited by AFP, after a telephone conversation between Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni.

Faced with this scenario, Meloni announced a package of measures to dissuade migrants who try to reach Italy irregularly, including extending the period of detention in centers for people awaiting repatriation to 18 months, the maximum allowed by law.

French President Emmanuel Macron also promised decisions of “European solidarity” with Italy in the face of the avalanche of migrant arrivals on the island of Lampedusa, but, in a message clearly addressed to Meloni’s government, he criticized its nationalist positions.

According to the Efe agency, which cites the Italian government, 127,207 immigrants have already disembarked in Italy this year, almost double the 66,237 in the same period in 2022 and triple the number in 2021 (42,750).
