A decision by judge Juan M. Merchan — just days before Trump’s debate on Thursday with Democratic President Joe Biden for the presidential elections in the United States – authorizes the likely Republican candidate to attack again his former lawyer Michael Cohen, the pornographic actress Stormy Daniels and other witnesses.
Trump was found guilty on May 30 of falsifying records to cover up a potential sex scandal, making him the first former US President convicted of a crime.
His lawyers urged Merchan to lift the gag order completely, arguing that there was nothing to justify continuing restrictions on Trump’s rights after the trial concluded.
The Republican politician claimed the gag order prevented him from defending himself as Cohen and Daniels continue to ridicule him.
The Manhattan, New York, district attorney’s office had asked Merchan to maintain a gag order ban on comments made by jurors, court staff and the prosecution team at least until Trump was sentenced on July 11. .
However, last week he said he would be OK with Trump commenting on witnesses now that the trial is over, while opposing lifting the ban on comments about the jury.
Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records stemming from what prosecutors said was an attempt to cover up a hush-money payment to Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.
The pornographic actress claimed she had a sexual encounter with Trump a decade earlier, which the Republican politician denies.
